What is the project about?
We want to find out which aspects of travel could be helped by better design.
Poor design affects disabled people’s travel across different types of transport and stages of the journey, from planning and booking journeys, through to getting on and off a vehicle and moving around inside.
What do we want this project to do?
Building on the foundation work that ncat has carried out so far, we want to explore the barriers to travel that we have already identified in more detail, to find out areas for potential opportunities to make design improvements.
These areas can then be explored in further projects which will, in turn, make recommendations for organisations about what design changes they should make to help improve people’s journeys.
How will we carry out the project?
We will be working directly with a range of disabled people to gain a deep and detailed understanding about the barriers that people experience whilst travelling.
We will do this by meeting people face to face, shadowing people’s journeys, and holding interviews and workshops relating to specific barriers.
We will also be working with industry to understand the context in which they operate, and the challenges and opportunities, and bring them along with the work.
What have we done so far?
We have looked at our work to date including Understanding and Identifying Barriers to Transport.
We have brought together the barriers that disabled people told us about as part of that work, and assessed each barrier to see if better design could help to remove or reduce the problem. For areas where we think better design could help, our next step will be to understand the barriers in greater depth by working directly with disabled people and industry.
