Document summary

This toolkit strategy sets out the benefits of active travel (making journeys by walking, wheeling and cycling) and the importance of active travel within the UK transport sector. The strategy outlines a range of actions that local authorities could undertake. It outlines that the government’s goal is for walking, wheeling, and cycling to be the first choice for shorter journeys or as part of longer journeys. Local authorities are pointed in the direction of the Wheels for Wellbeing Infrastructure for All campaign, which they should consider when planning/designing new infrastructure. Wheels for Wellbeing are national charity which work with disabled people to face barriers taking part in any physical activity.
