Meet Chris: member of our CAT panel

Chris, CAT panel member

“I joined the ncat panel because I want to see more change – it’s just so slow, so frustrating!”

Chris is a wheelchair user from the south-west of England and is a Disability and Equalities trainer.  He works with major companies to help them understand how being an equitable employer and service provider can be beneficial to their business.

“Many people find it hard to fully grasp the concept of the social model of disability,” he says.  “Companies often don’t realise they’re creating the disability by not making what they offer accessible, or that they have the ability to make simple changes that can improve things for everyone.”

Chris travels for work and pleasure and prefers to drive, choosing his electric vehicle over trains.

“I don’t use public transport much because I would rather be self-reliant. I’m also not close to a train station that is accessible.”

Chris finds there can be little awareness among the general population that disability will likely affect all of us.  With an ageing population, he sees ncat’s work as futureproofing the transport system.  He’s also appreciative of the opportunity it’s giving him to share his experiences as an end-user and feels more disabled people should make their voices heard.

“You don’t want people who are not disabled making decisions for you.  If you’ve ever faced a lack of service, you need to get involved.”
