Ncat’s Accessible Transport Policy Commission hosted its autumn roundtable in Parliament on Wednesday 9th October to discuss the findings of our research into the roles and responsibilities of accessible transport staff in local government. Chairing the event was Richard Baker MP, our new Vice Chair for the Policy Commission.
Clive Gilbert from Policy Connect began the event by sharing a presentation about ncat’s latest research which explored the practices of local government staff, that is, staff whose jobs have a specific focus on accessibility or who are in positions with a wider remit that include accessibility as a key responsibility, and the challenges they face in their roles.
Following this presentation there was a panel discussion of the findings with contributions from:
- Helen Ellerton, Head of Transport Policy at West Yorkshire Combined Authority.
- Keith McKain, National Bus Strategy Programme Manager at Surrey County Council.
- Debbie Preston, Access Advisor at Liverpool City Region Combined Authority.
To close, the groupreviewed ncat’s recommendations which will be featured in an upcoming report on the accessibility of local transport systems.
The Accessible Transport Policy Commission holds meetings in Parliament to bring together Parliamentarians, disabled people, transport professionals and policymakers from the national, regional, local and devolved levels of government to improve public policies and everyday practices. It does this by applying evidence and insights from ncat and a wide range of other experts through roundtable discussions, research symposiums and cross-sector meetings.
